Why the beach is still modelled

Feeds, and what is next

The Cefas buoys measure a few miles offshore, and the Environment Agency samples bathing waters weekly in summer. No open, live feed measures the water at the beach itself yet. Until that changes, the Open-Meteo marine model is the honest best we have, and we label it as such.

Where the numbers come from

Two kinds of numbers, both marked

Two kinds of numbers live on this page. The measured ones come from the Cefas WaveNet wave buoys, seventeen thermometers anchored around the coast from Scilly to Orkney, read every 30 minutes and shown with their time. The rest comes from the Open-Meteo marine model: sea-surface temperature computed for each beach, refreshed continuously. It is good at open water and worse in shallow bays, which warm two or three degrees beyond the model on a sunny afternoon. We never present a model value as a measurement, here or in the app.

Cold water, real rules

British sea stays below 20 °C most of the year. Below 15 °C the first minute matters most: enter slowly, control your breathing, never swim alone. The app gives a per-sport call for every spot, model or measured.

Good to know
How warm is the sea around the UK right now?

Right now the warmest measured UK spot is Springfield Park at 20.6 °C. The full picture — every station with history — is one tap away in the free BrrChecker app.

When is the UK sea warmest?

Late August into September: the sea lags the air by weeks, so the warmest water arrives after the warmest days — a fact only measured data shows honestly.

Where do these values come from?

Official measuring stations around the British and Irish coasts and lakes, each with its measurement time. No estimates.

Check first, then swim.
